Good stuff! Some music I’ve never heard before too so I plan on checking those out! Sneak peak: {“4. Those Crosstown Rivals – Hell and Back “Bad Ass sons of bitches playin’ bad ass rock and roll.” As they say on their page. I would have to agree. This is outlaw country/rock and roll. If you like early Lucero, drinking beer, kicking shit, and backyard tire fires, then this one is your soundtrack”}

February 2014 sounded something like this on my end. Albums just kept flowing in and sounding better and better. Top additions to my library included the following for February, whether they were released in February or not. (125 total, 75-2014 releases added this month)

15. Acid Lake – S/T (EP)

Found this one randomly on bandcamp and had this to say, “”We Can’t Complain” stands out but I can’t complain about the riveting display of melodic heavy rock and metal on all 4 tracks.Vocals exhibit an alternative grunge undertone beneath their ferocious wails. Very impressed. Keep an ear open for these Germans.”

14. Kamchatcka – The Search Goes On

Kamchatka have always been a cool side project with members of Clutch, Opeth and King Hobo. The Search Goes On is a classic blues rock and roll masterpiece sounding similar to Government Mule and/or Black Country Communion with a little fuzzier backbone.

13.  Servers – Leave With Us

Servers was passed over from Steve at The Sludgelord who always has top notch recommendations and Servers is one of them. Combines metal with heavy grunge and bits of southern post-hardcore. Album is available to purchase at iTunes and/or Amazon digitally.

12.  Rintrah – Salt of the Earth

These guys blew me away with the Toolish blend of metal. Modern blend of 90’s rock and progressive sludge is easy on my ears. Have a listen for yourself.  I recommend the title track for a taste.

11. Swamp Machine – Mondo Magic

Here is my review at The Sludgelord blog.

10. Ogre – The Last Neanderthal

This one has yet to be officially released, but I got a copy and it rips. It took me a couple listens to get over the silly band name but Imagine Black Sabbath with more guitar solos.

9. Almathea – In the Woods

Not my normal go-to style but Almathea inject enough atmospheric heavy elements to overcome their screamo tendencies. Just find this album and tell me it isn’t a masterpiece in every sense of the word.  It would give you wood, in the woods.

8. Scott H. Biram – Nothin’ But Blood

This will go down as one of the best albums in the outlaw country/blues category this year no doubt. So much passion and variety on this one. Some funky blues/gospel, old school country and heavy rock all melded together like a scabbing wound.

7. Volume IV – Long in the Tooth

“Absolutely fantastic release and another winner for Ripple Music. This has got it all, hard hitting modern slabs of doom, soft metal dance ballads, and straight up fuzz rock anthems. For fans of Black Label Society, Down, Motorhead, Mastodon, Red Fang.” Ordered up the limited edition vinyl from Ripple Music and cannot wait to get my hands on it. One of the prettiest records of the year.

6. The Socks – S/T

Snippet from my upcoming review at The Sludgelord, “Adding a bit of flair to the attire The Socks combine not only the flooded retro sensibility but craft a trippy, yet completely competent and seriously invigorating display of rock and roll. Chalked full of not only guitar solos galore, but bits of bluesy fuzz-o-rama and hints of psychedelia add warmth and comfort, not unlike a great pair of socks…”

5. Dwellers – Pagan Fruit

Another Small Stone release ranking high on the list this year is the new one by Dwellers. Total psychedelic blues rock. This record will leave you in a state of euphoria with its stunning execution of tripped out blues.

4. Those Crosstown Rivals – Hell and Back

“Bad Ass sons of bitches playin’ bad ass rock and roll.” As they say on their page. I would have to agree. This is outlaw country/rock and roll. If you like early Lucero, drinking beer, kicking shit, and backyard tire fires, then this one is your soundtrack.

3.  The Shrine – Bless Off!

Here is my review I did for The Shrine at The Sludgelord.

2. Mantar – Death By Burning

Mantar absolutely pummeled me senses with this astonishing blend of black and doom metal. Sure to make its way into a many year end lists including mine.

1. Aleph Null – Nocturnal

Can I say FREE? Yes, this master class dark grungy, psychedelic doom metal masterpiece is being given away with one simple click of a mouse button. Alice in Chains is an apt comparison at their darkest and doomiest. This will warp your mind with intricately balanced riffs that feel like you’re tunneling through World 8-4 on the original Mario Brothers.

smokeonthekillingfloor:

Pumping fists, loud drums, squealing guitars, cold beer, stale smoke, blood, sweat, and tears. Not only does that describe the atmosphere of the last time I saw Those Crosstown Rivals (TCR) play a live show, it’s all the things that make Rock n Roll great. Add hard working, determined, passionate,…

Incognito Music loves it; so much so an early candidate for a favorite of 2014. Have you listened yet? Don’t be a dumbass…

The Misfits. The ones that count. It was the first thing that popped into my head when it started playing the first time. Which is great, at least to me. This is a heavier album. Rock n’ Roll drums, driven guitars and vocals that have some soar to them. Now I wouldn’t rob a bank, but if I did, I’d be driving a getaway car Jason Statham style to this album. This album is one you can speed off and let your badmotorfinger fly at the world.
"Hell And Back" is the opening title track from Those Crosstown Rivals’s new album. This album just has balls. It lets you know it and reminds you of that fact throughout the album.
I really dig “Ugly Side”, “Be A Man”, “Look At Me” and “Blood Sweat And Tears”. This album just has a familiar feel to it. It’s fresh and original, but the vibe is what it should be. It’s one of the things that I really like about Those Crosstown Rivals.

The date is quickly approaching. It’s almost time to put on your party pants and come hang with TCR.

SNEAK PEAK of Those Crosstown Rivals new album “Hell and Back” due out in early March! (So it’s technically not a sneak peek but a great excuse to show a very proud “dad moment.” However, that IS 15 seconds of TCR’s new album so it’s also not a lie) - JT
